Power Supply and AC Power Cord for 7-Series Recorders

Beginning October 2007, the included AC power supply for the 7-Series recorders was revised to an improved, in-line, grounded supply. The new power supply, like the original power supply, is designed for worldwide operation, accepting 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz. Unlike the original supply, this new supply uses a detachable power cord. Solid State Hard Drives (SSD) in the 722 and 744T

Solid state hard drives, or SSD drives, are becoming a feasible storage medium for portable recorders and computers. Like CompactFlash cards, SSD drives have no moving parts and greatly extend the environmental operating conditions of the recorders. (more…)

7-Series Folder Options in Firmware 2.09 and Later

Q: I updated my 7-Series recorder to the most recent version of firmware from version 2.03. My recorder no longer places recorded files in a folder. Soundfield B-Format Recording and Monitoring

Multi-channel surround sound recording has historically been a gear-intensive process, requiring a multi-track recorder and multiple microphones. One tool used to reduce the complexity of surround recording is the SoundField microphone system. (more…)

702T/744T Digital Inputs and Time Code

When using the 702T or 744T AES/EBU digital inputs and the built in time code generator to slave the recorders from a mixer with digital outputs, care must be taken. The 702T and 744T internal time code generator can only run off of its internal high-accuracy crystal - it does not use word clock or AES/EBU to derive time code. (more…)

Time Code Accuracy when Powered Down

Q: How long will the time code generator hold accurate time code after a 702T or 744T has been shut down? (more…)

MP2/MP3 File Playback Bug in Firmware Version 2.34

MP2 and MP3 sound files generated by a 7-Series recorder running version 2.34 firmware play incorrectly when played back on a 7-Series recorder running 2.34. The file duration is incorrectly calculated, causing the machine to cut short the file playback. Playback is unaffected when using third party hardware and software to play MP2 and MP3 files. (more…)

Proper Routing When Recording Inputs 3 and 4 Only on the 744T

Q: I am set up to record two-track WAV poly files with my 744T but when I import my files into my DAW there are four tracks, two of which have nothing on them. I feed the recorder a two-channel stereo mix using the line in TA3 connectors on my 744T. I have custom routed inputs 3 and 4 to tracks C and D. Why is my two-track WAV poly setup creating four-track WAV poly files. (more…)

RF Emissions and the 702, 722, and 744T Recorders

Sound Devices 702, 722, and 744T hard disk recorders have broken new ground for size and performance of modern digital audio recorders. As with the introduction of many new product categories, however, some things that were taken for granted in the past may have to be re-thought moving forward. One area where the modern recorder is different than that of earlier generations is in its use of computing power. (more…)

FireWire Hot-Plugging Precaution

Sound Devices strongly recommends shutting down equipment before connecting to or from any FireWire device with a connection that carries power (6-pin). Reports have come to our attention of isolated problems when hot-plugging IEEE 1394 (FireWire) devices. (Hot-plugging refers to making the connections when one or more of the devices—including the computer—is on.) (more…)
