There are many advantages to recording to solid-state hard drives (SSD), including improved mechanical robustness, faster transfer speeds, and silent operation. Additionally, the 788T-SSD has 96 GB of additional on-board of storage space versus the 788T. Regarding power consumption, the power consumption (and therefore run time) between the spinning hard drive in the hard drive-equipped 788T and the SSD in the 788T-SSD is nearly identical. (more…)

The 7-Series recorders are powered by either a removable Li-ion battery or external DC sources. Sound Devices includes a DC power supply with the unit. The specific supply and its output power varies, based on the time of purchase. (more…)

7-Series recorders automatically switch from external DC power to the attached Li-ion battery when the external voltage falls below a 9 volt threshold (or the setup-menu set voltage on the 788T). This seamless switchover provides protection against sudden or unexpected loss of external power. (more…)

Most Sound Devices mixers, amplifiers, and recorders have external DC inputs. These inputs can be used with AC transformers (and switching power supplies) to provide power for their operation. The 302, 442, HX-3, MixPre, and MM-1 can be powered from external DC sources with voltages ranging from 5 to 18 volts. The 702, 702T, 722, and 744T can run on external voltages from 10 to 18 VDC. Beginning October 2007, the included AC power supply for the 7-Series recorders was revised to an improved, in-line, grounded supply. The new power supply, like the original power supply, is designed for worldwide operation, accepting 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz. Unlike the original supply, this new supply uses a detachable power cord. Q: What is the battery life of these recorders?
A: Run time estimates vary significantly depending on two primary factors, 1) power available and, 2) current draw. The OE (factory supplied) battery is a 4600 mAH capacity (722 and 744T) cell which under typical situations will power the unit for approximately 2 hours. Batteries in large capacities (+7000 mAh) are usable with the 7-Series. (more…)
