302 Input and Output Panel Descriptions

The chart below describes the inputs and output panels of the Sound Devices 302 Compact Field Mixer, including functionality and pin configurations.

The 302 Input Panel

302 Input Callouts

# I/O Connector Type Pin Configuration
Notes
1 Inputs 1-3 Transformer Balanced XLR-Female pin-1 = ground pin-2 = hot
pin 3 = cold
For unbalanced inputs, ground pin-3 to pin-1 of the XLR-Male connector. Inputs can be selected to either mic or line-level using the switch above the respective input’s XLR connector. Stereo linking between channels 1 and 2 can be set in the 302 Setup Menu. When using MS Stereo techniques use channel 1 for the “Mid” input and channel 2 for the “Side” input.
2 Headphone Output 3.5 mm TRS Stereo Female tip = left
ring = right sleeve = ground
Drive headphones from 8 to 2000 ohms to required monitoring levels.

The 302 Output Panel

302 Output Panel

# I/O Connector Type Pin Configuration
Notes
1 Left Channel Master Output Active Balanced XLR-Male pin-1 = ground pin-2 = hot
pin 3 = cold
If connecting to an unbalanced input, unbalance the output by using pin-2 for signal and pin-1 for ground. The output level can be attenuated in the 302 Setup Menu from line-level to mic-level. Attenuation is set from 0 to -16 dB in 2 dB increments, and -40 to -56 dB in 2 dB increments. Output level attenuation is applied jointly at both left and right master outputs.
2 Right Channel Master Output Active Balanced XLR-Male pin-1 = ground pin-2 = hot
pin 3 = cold
If connecting to an unbalanced input, unbalance the output by using pin-2 for signal and pin-1 for ground. The output level can be attenuated in the 302 Setup Menu from line-level to mic-level. Attenuation is set from 0 to -16 dB in 2 dB increments, and -40 to -56 dB in 2 dB increments. Output level attenuation is applied jointly at both left and right master outputs.
3 Return (Channel 4 and 5) Input Unbalanced Stereo 3.5-mm Female tip = left
ring = right
sleeve = ground
This connection can be used for monitoring returns or as inputs 4 & 5 when selected in Setup Menu. See The “Five Channel” 302 for more details.
4 Mix In Unbalanced Stereo TA3 Male Input pin-1 = ground
pin-2 = left
pin 3 = right
An input to the master bus designed exclusively to link the Tape Out/ Mix Out of a 302, 442, MixPre, or MP-2 (discontinued) to the 302 for additional inputs. Shell of TA3 connector must be grounded to pin-1 to open connection.
5 Tape Out/Mix Out Unbalanced Stereo TA3 Male Output pin-1 = ground
pin-2 = left
pin 3 = right
Same program as master output. Also used to link to the Mix In of a 442 or 302.
6 DC Input Hirose 4-Pin Female pin-1 = (-)negative
pin 4 = (+)positive
Accepts DC voltages from 5–18 VDC for mixer powering. External DC is completely isolated (floating) from the rest of the circuitry. Commonly used with Sound Devices XL-WPH2 power supply.
