Powering Sound Devices Products from AC

Most Sound Devices mixers, amplifiers, and recorders have external DC inputs. These inputs can be used with AC transformers (and switching power supplies) to provide power for their operation. The 302, 442, HX-3, MixPre, and MM-1 can be powered from external DC sources with voltages ranging from 5 to 18 volts. The 702, 702T, 722, and 744T can run on external voltages from 10 to 18 VDC.

XL-WPH2

Sound Devices XL-WPH2 can be used to directly power the following Sound Devices models:

  • 302
  • 442
  • 702 - included with product
  • 702T - included with product
  • 722 - included with product
  • 744T - included with product
  • MixPre

It operates on voltages from 100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz and ships ready to use, with a four-pin Hirose connector at the equipment end.

AC Adapters

Below is a list of adapters from Radio Shack that work with Sound Devices mixers and recorders. When using AC adapters for 7-Series recorders, make certain the supply provides between 10 V and 18 V and provides at least 24 watts. Note, the adapters listed below are all 115 VAC products and are not designed for use with 230 VAC.

Radio Shack P/ N Voltage Current Capability
273-025 6 V 300 mA
273-1766 6 V 800 mA
273-027 9 V 300 mA
273-1768 9 V 800 mA
273-1774 12 V 500 mA
273-029 3-12 V 1000 mA
273-1775 12V 1500 mA
273-028 1.5-12 V 300 mA

DC Plug for Hirose

The 302, 442, 702, 702T, 722, 744T, and MixPre use a four-pin Hirose connector external power. Sound Devices XL-H  is a bare mating connector for use with 4-pin Hirose-equipped products. This connector is locking and designed specifically for portable use. For operation when using one of the AC adapters above, remove the attached, molded jack and connect the relevant mating jack. Make a note of the polarity of the adapter. The Hirose is wired as pin-4 positive, pin-1 negative.

DC Plug for Coaxial

Sound Devices MM-1, HX-3, and early versions of the MixPre and 442 mixers use a coaxial DC power connector. The mating, locking plug is available from Sound Devices as part number XL-DC.

Radio Shack’s Adaptaplug M, p/n 273-1716, which has an inner diameter of 2.1 mm and an outer diameter of 5.5 mm can be used for a non-locking connection with these units.

Voltage and Current Draw

All Sound Devices products use high-technology switching power supplies to provide internal operating voltages; there is no performance benefit from running the units on a particular voltage. As long as the voltage and current rating meet the product specifications, the unit will operate to its published specification.
