"The versatility of the 688 to fit into any production scenario from bag to cart, reality to feature, really makes this platform a true future proof investment."Tom Craca, Professional Sound Mixer
12-Input Field Production Mixer with 16-Track Recorder and MixAssist™
The 688 is a production sound engineer’s dream come true - a portable audio powerhouse that incorporates multi-channel mixer, two powerful automixers, and integrated recorder plus optional SL-6 integrated powering and wireless system. By consolidating these functions, cabling requirements are significantly decreased, de-cluttering the sound mixer’s bag, increasing reliability and improving ease of use. With the SL-6 and SuperSlot-compatible receivers, the 688 gains complete Rx control and monitoring, plus RF scanning and frequency assignment, all from the 688's larger color LCD.
Inputs and Outputs
The 688 has six high-bandwidth mic/line inputs on XLR connectors, each complete with phantom power, high-pass filter, analog input limiter and variable pan. Six additional line-level inputs on TA3 connectors offer flexibility for more complex productions.
All inputs are assignable, pre- or post-fade to its eight output buses, left/right plus Aux 1-6. The 688 can send its main left/right mix to three cameras simultaneously via transformer-balanced XLR and Hirose outputs.
Two Auto Mixers: The Choice is Yours
In keeping with Sound Devices' commitment to giving production sound mixers the tools they need to help them mix in increasingly complex production settings, the inclusion of the Dugan Speech System™, along with Sound Devices' MixAssist™, makes the 688 the 'go-to' automixing tool for field production applications. Automatic mixing is widely used in broadcast television applications, in dialogue recording for TV and motion picture production, and in house of worship (HOW) applications. It also is a good choice for teleconferencing, video trucks, and theater applications with multiple wireless microphones on stage. Dugan automixing takes over the nerve-wracking job of cueing mics in and out, freeing up the location recordist to pay more attention to the artistic balance.
MixAssist automatically attenuates the level of inputs that are not active and helps maintain consistent background sound levels regardless of the number of open microphones. Comb filtering and phasing artifacts are also reduced when multiple mics pick up the same sound source by inteligently attenuating redundant mics. The end user can define the amount of off-attenuation MixAssist uses.
The 688 offers 16-track, polyphonic or monophonic broadcast WAV file recording to SD and CompactFlash cards. All common sampling rates are supported, including 192 kHz on up to six tracks. The memory cards can be set independently, recording either identical material for real-time backup, or combinations of WAV and MP3 files.
Timecode and Metadata
The 688 features a world renowned Ambient™ timecode generator and reader supporting all common rates and modes. A helpful time code compare utility shows the difference between internal and external timecode. The 688 also generates sound reports and supports extensive metadata, via the front panel or attached USB keyboard.
The ability to remotely control any 6-Series mixer/recorder (688, 664, and 633) makes for greater convenience and flexibility on set and in the field. With wireless remote control, via third-party systems, Sound Mixers can:
- Start and stop recordings
- Arm and name tracks
- Edit a take’s metadata
- Circle takes and set False takes
- View, transmit, and receive timecode
- Create sound reports
Since our 6-series users are so passionate, Ambient™ Recording (along with Lockit Network GmBH), as well as Timecode Systems (with PureBlend Software) enhanced some of their existing wireless solutions to work with Sound Devices' 688, 664 and 633 mixer/recorders. In an effort to continuously collaborate with industry partners, as well as support new workflows that may benefit our loyal customers, we are excited to say that the 688 firmware release v.3.10 not only offers regular mixer/recorder enhancements, but also supports both third-parties' solutions.
- As always, our firmware updates are free to our customers.
- If you currently have the necessary gear from Ambient, additional investment should be nominal. You can learn more by visiting Ambient's website.
- If you already have the :wave from Timecode Systems and/or PureBlend's MovieSlate app with Sound Dept. PRO, you should be ready to rock as well. You can learn more about the combined solution here from Timecode Systems and MovieSlate

The 688 incorporates exclusive PowerSafe circuitry with smart sensing of available power sources, front panel warning indication of power loss, and an integrated 10-second power reserve that will, in the event of an inadvertent power loss, allow the 688 to safely stop recording, properly end all file operations, and then automatically shut down.
Power on and start recording in less than two seconds. You never have to wait on sound.
The optional CL-12 linear fader controller significantly expands the mixing capability of the 688. With the CL-12, the 688 gains a 3-band parametric equalizer for each of its 12 inputs, shortcut access to SuperSlot™ wireless receiver data (when used with the SL-6), and MixAssist™ auto-mix monitoring. Tactile controls, including illuminated buttons and twelve easy-to-use manual faders, combine with LED metering to improve the whole mixing experience.
The CL-12 comes in two models: the standard CL-12, designed to be a sleek and durable mixing surface with robust black aluminum side panels, and the CL-12 Alaia, which features incredibly smooth gliding Penny & Giles faders and gorgeous custom hardwood side panels.
For a virtually cable free bag, attach this optional power distribution and six channel wireless system. Its three slots provide powering and audio interconnection between the 688 and slot-in receivers plus fully integrated control and monitoring of SuperSlot™ receivers, plus RF spectrum scanning and frequency assignment, direct from the mixer's LCD. With its built-in RF signal distribution, the SL-6 reduces the need for multiple antenna while its NP1 battery slot, USB charging port, two 12 V isolated outputs, and two non-isolated direct battery outputs provide powering for peripheral devices. This optional input controller attaches to the bottom of the 688 and adds six full-sized tactile fader control of channels 7-12, sunlight-viewable LED metering and big, back-lit record and stop controls. When the CL-6 is attached to a 688, the 688’s mini-faders, originally assigned as faders for 7-12, switch to trim controls.
