Camera Returns with the 788T

The 788T has been designed as a ‘big brother’ to the 744T recorder, offering many more inputs and greater headphone monitoring capabilities. Although it is designed as a recorder (not a mixer/recorder), it does offer some mixer-like functionality. One of these functions is the ability to use unused inputs as camera returns.

In situations not requiring all eight inputs, the remaining unused inputs can be used as camera returns. In this application, the Input Selector Switch become a handy Return switch. Since the 788T’s inputs can accept balanced or unbalanced signals−from weak mic level to hot line level−this function can be used with any camera with the proper cabling. The example below uses Inputs 1 through 6 for recording, and Inputs 7 and 8 for a stereo camera return:

  • Connect the camera’s L output to Input 7 and connect the camera’s R output to Input 8.
  • Route Inputs 1 through 6 to the appropriate recording tracks via each of their Input Screens and make sure that 7 and 8 are not routed to any recording tracks.
  • Go to Menu #18, Input: Linking, MS and select “7-8” for the linked inputs.
  • Select Mic or Line as the input level for 7 and 8, and use the 7 and 8 gain knobs to set the return level.
  • To listen to the camera, simply move the 7-8 Input Select Switch in either direction and Camera Return audio will be heard in the headphones of the 788T.

In another example, inputs 1 through 6 are used for recording, and 7 and 8 are each used to hear a mono return from two different cameras:

  • Connect camera “A” output to Input 7 and connect camera “B” output to Input 8
  • Route Inputs 1 through 6 to the appropriate recording tracks via each of their Input Screens and make sure that 7 and 8 are not routed to any recording tracks.
  • Go to Menu #18) Input: Linking, MS and select “Unlinked” for the linked inputs.
  • Select Mic or Line as the input level for 7 and 8, and use the 7 and 8 gain knobs to set the desired return level.
  • To listen to the Camera, simply move the 7-8 Input Select Switch to 7 to listen to Camera “A”and to 8 to listen to Camera “B.”
