Astral Guitar Box
The Sound Devices Astral Guitar box is custom designed specifically to interface ARX16 or ARX32 balanced outputs to guitar amp and guitar pedals’ unbalanced 1/4″ inputs. Compared to competitive wireless guitar systems, long cable runs with the Astral system are balanced runs instead of long unbalanced runs, minimizing noise pickup and ground loops. In fact the Astral guitar box can be used in either direction to go XLR to 1/4″ or go 1/4″ to XLR allowing the run from guitar pedals to the amp run to be fully balanced as well.
At the heart of the Astral Guitar box is one of the most highly-regarded transformers on the planet, the Lundahl LL1540. Handcrafted in Sweden, this transformer features a massive amount of core material which allows it to do the unbalancing with very little distortion across its the entire 5Hz – 50kHz band. Distortion should be added by guitaramps and effects — not by wireless systems. The Lundahl transformer is a true work of art, featuring electrostatic shields between every winding layer, and a full mu-metal shield around the coils. These features make hum and ground loops in a guitar system a thing of the past.
